Assistant Foreign Minister Zhang Jun Attends the 74th Session of the UN ESCAP

From May 14 to 15, 2018, the 74th Session of the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) was held in Bangkok, Thailand. The theme of the Session is "Inequality in the Era of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development." Assistant Foreign Minister Zhang Jun led a delegation to attend the Session.

Zhang Jun made a speech at the General Debate, and expounded China's view on the world's economic situation and proposition on Asia-Pacific cooperation. He expressed that all parties in the Asia-Pacific region should adhere to innovation-driven development and forge robust development impetus. We should adhere to open development and oppose trade protectionism to push for the construction of economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region. We should adhere to connectivity and deepen coordination and integration between the ESCAP and the "Belt and Road" to construct an interconnected development landscape. All parties should remain committed to joint contribution and shared benefits as well as endeavor to eradicate poverty and inequality to boost inclusive and sustainable development. China is willing to work with all parties to actively carry out international cooperation of the "Belt and Road", forge partnership and deepen practical cooperation, in a bid to make new contributions to the prosperity and development of the Asia-Pacific region.

Zhang Jun made introductory remarks at a panel discussion on multilateralism and elaborated the important significance of upholding multilateralism under the current situation. He pointed out that as multilateralism represents the general trend of the world's development, adhering to multilateralism is the requirement of safeguarding the common interests of all parties, realizing fairness and justice and coping with major global challenges. We should firmly grasp the right direction of global governance, and maintain the multilateral mechanism with the UN at the core. We must uphold rules-based multilateral trade system, propel interconnected development, advocate partnership and build a community with a shared future for mankind. China will continuously uphold the concept of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, play the role of a responsible major country, unswervingly push forward multilateralism cooperation and actively advance the "Belt and Road" construction, in a bid to inject fresh impetus into multilateralism.

During his attendance at the Session, Zhang Jun met with Executive Secretary Shamshad Akhtar of UN ESCAP, exchanging views on the cooperation between China and the ESCAP and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

During the Session, all parties spoke positively of China's important role in safeguarding multilateralism, constructing an open economy and promoting international development cooperation.
