Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou Talks about Korean Peninsula Situation with the Japanese Side

On January 8, 2018, Vice Foreign Minister and Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Korean Peninsula Affairs Kong Xuanyou held telephone talks at request with Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and chief representative for six-party talks Kanasugi Kenji of Japan, exchanging views on the Korean Peninsula situation.

Both sides spoke positively about the positive changes in the current Korean Peninsula situation. Kong Xuanyou expressed that China welcomes and supports the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in taking this opportunity of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics to engage in contact and dialogue. It is hoped that the dialogue between the DPRK and the ROK will yield positive results so as to create conditions for restarting dialogue and consultation on the Korean Peninsula issue. Under the current circumstances, all relevant parties should actively support the dialogue between the DPRK and the ROK in a bid to make more constructive efforts in easing tension and enhancing mutual trust. The Japanese side expressed that the realization of the dialogue between the DPRK and the ROK is a good thing. The Japanese side is willing to play a constructive role in pushing for sound development of the Korean Peninsula situation.
